After over 45 years of business, Buddy’s Water Ice, a Norristown water ice shop, is closing for good on Sunday, September 6. Located at 514 E. Main St, the neighborhood store was known for its lemon water ice, choose-your-own gelati and friendly atmosphere.

Owners Debbie and Nicholas Lenhart are closing the store to focus on their retirement. “After 67 years, it’s time,” said Debbie. The couple encouraged customers to visit for one last scoop and say goodbye.

Buddy’s has always been a family business. The store was originally owned by Nicholas’ father, Buddy Lenhart, who was often seen talking with customers at the front window. Buddy was known for his personable attitude and familiarity with each patron. Over time, his son Nicholas took up the business and has run it alongside his wife ever since. Debbie also has her own water ice history. She grew up working in her father’s water ice shop, Marcy’s, which was also on Main Street. Marcy’s has since closed, but according to the couple, there was a rivalry between the two stores. However, the sweetness of their relationship seemed to mellow things out.

After learning of the shop’s closing, many Norristown residents expressed sadness at the news and recounted their memories of the ice cream shop. “I grew up in this neighborhood, and Buddy’s Water Ice was such a huge part of my childhood,” said Danielle Adams in a Facebook post. “Thank you for all the sweet memories ~ you’ll be deeply missed.”
