Wister’s BBQ in Lansdale is closing its doors on August 30, 2026. Located at 575 South Broad Street, the American barbecue restaurant was known locally for its slow-cooked meats. Some of its most popular specialties included its St. Louis BBQ ribs and brisket platters.
The business was founded by former financial analyst Michael C. Wister. The business initially operated as a roadside stand and mobile smoker under the name “Smoke Daddy’s Home Grown Barbecue.” Wister discovered his love for barbecue when he purchased a smoker and began barbecuing as a hobby in 2001. After cooking for friends and family, the business grew, Wister’s food stand served customers from the Hatfield American Legion to visitors at Lansdale Bike Nights.
Wister’s business won the 2008 Garry Maddox Barbecue Challenge, earning local acclaim. As his food grew in popularity, Wister opened a brick-and-mortar location in Lansdale and served the community for nearly 10 years until he renamed it Wister’s BBQ in 2019.
After the death of Michael C. Wister in 2024, his son and current owner, Michael J. Wister, took over the business. When citing the reason for the restaurant’s closing, he said: “I simply feel that it’s time for me to move on to the next chapter of my life.”
Wister thanked the restaurant’s customers and encouraged them to visit for a meal and redeem unused gift cards or loyalty points as not to waste food. He warned that the menu may be limited as the closing date draws near. Wister also asked those interested in purchasing the restaurant’s smoking and cooking equipment to contact him or the business.
